chelmsford super XV meet RFU president

by Hon Secretary November 27, 2009 19:27

The Essex County RFU Presidents dinner provided the ideal opportunity for the RFU President John Owen to boost his appeal to clubs to aid the Cumbrian flood disatster appeal.  At its annual Presidents Dinner, held at the Ivy Hill Hotel Margaretting,  Essex Rugby people generously donated cash and their raffle prizes to the the benefit of the fund.  Amongst the contributors were some of the stalwats of Chelmsford RFC who have received funding from the RFU in the past towards the development of their club and they were gracious in their contributions to the Presidents appeal.

RFU President appeals for Cumbria aid

by Hon Secretary November 25, 2009 10:30

Rugby Football Union - Press Release
RFU President appeals for Cumbria aid
Wednesday November 25, 2009
Issued by Tony Simpson
RFU President John Owen
RFU President John Owen
RUGBY Football Union President John Owen has appealed to RU clubs across the country to take a bucket collection at their games this weekend in aid of the victims of the flooding in Cumbria.

The Chairman of the Cumbria RFU as well as the President of the Union who lives on the higher ground at Shap, Owen is still close to the devastation that has been visited upon communities like Cockermouth and Workington and in his role as the figurehead of one of England's major sports, he has urged clubs to back his appeal.

"It will be a while before the after-effects of this crisis have passed and before then, families and communities will need all the help we can give them to get through," he says: "As a former policeman, I am desperately saddened by the death of PC Bill Barker while he was serving his community. He was a former Egremont player himself and his loss is the biggest tragedy of all. Our thoughts are with his family in these difficult times.

"It is important that as a rugby family we help those less fortunate than ourselves and many who are suffering to-day have close ties with us. It is at times like this that the long- established core values of our sport come to the fore - friendship and the ability to respect and assist those who are in difficulties through no fault of their own.

"There is so much to be done now in terms of getting the transport system working again and the general clean-up operation, but for individual families there will be real day-to-day issues that the rugby community across the country can help with by making a donation.

"I noticed that England wing Mark Cueto, a Workington lad, has instigated a collection at the next Sale Sharks game, and I think we should replicate that initiative across the whole game.

"We have the power to offer tangible support for people who are suffering and as a Cumbrian who can see at first hand what has been inflicted upon my community, I urge clubs to respond and help the people in this neck of the woods who are really struggling."

Donations/cheques made payable to the 'Cumbria Community Foundation', with 'Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund' written on the reverse side, should be sent to:

The Cumbria Community Foundation, Dovenby Hall, Cockermouth CA13 0PN.

Weekend roundup 7th November 2009

by Hon Secretary November 08, 2009 11:08

The excitement and thrill of open play resulting in tries was not at Twickenham this weekend, instead it started of with another startling display by Barking at Goresbrook as they maintained their unbeaten run with a 32 - 0 win over Westcombe Park and Southend, were also in try scoring mood as they beat their hosts Canterbury 29 - 44.  Barking head the table with 45 points having been docked 2 points for not having enough front row players at Bridgewater earlier on in the season.  Southend are a credible fifth on 27 points.  Both teams have difficult matches next weekend as Barking go to Clifton and Southen host Dings Crusaders.

London 1 North - Westcliff proove they are worthy promotion contenders as they beat fifth palced Ruslip 5-23 to remain in second place to Civil SErvice who justified their leadership of this league with a  58 - 7 win over Woodford who remain in seventh place.  Chingford consolidate their thrid place with 18 -6 win over Brentwood who slip down to tenth.  Eton Manor remain towards the foot of the table in twelsth after loosing to sisth paced Letchworth by 10 points to 5.  Rochford meanwhile are finding promotion to this league a bit harder to face as they were pounded by fourth place Staines ninty-two points to nil.

London 2 NE - The highlight of the day was the top of the table clash between Thurrock and Braintree.  Thurrock manaaged tomaintain their unbeaten run with a 5-18 victory which opens up a four point gap over Braintree.  Romford remain in third place with a 15-10 win over Norwich at Crow Lane.  Saffron Walden move up to sixth with a 27 -20 win over fifth palced Colchester.  Sudbury stay in fourth palce having beaten bottom club Mersea Island 64-0.  Harlow stay just above Chelmsford with a 31-10 win over Ipswich whilst Chelmsford loose out to Enfield Ignations by 19-17.
